A brand launch has one chance to introduce the identity to the world. The motion design around that launch — the reveal video, the animated logo, the social content — sets the tone for how the new brand will be perceived. Getting it wrong is expensive to undo.
The Launch Reveal Film
Most significant brand launches include a short film — typically 60–90 seconds — that introduces the new identity, explains the thinking behind it, and communicates the brand's positioning. This film is usually shared internally first, then publicly.
I think about this film differently from a typical motion design brief. It's not just a showcase of the visual identity — it's a narrative about the brand's purpose and direction. The visual design serves the story; the story isn't scaffolding for showcasing the design.
Sequencing the Elements
The reveal sequence — the order in which identity elements appear — is a design decision with real implications. Leading with the wordmark says this brand is built on its name. Leading with a graphic element before the wordmark creates mystery and revelation. Leading with a key visual before any branded elements creates emotional context before identity recognition.
I plan the reveal sequence as a narrative arc: setup, development, resolution. The audience needs to feel the brand before they identify it.
Animated Logo Principles
The animated logo for a launch film is typically the most refined motion piece in the brand's system. It needs to feel inevitable — the animation should feel like it reveals something that was always there, not like decoration added to a static mark.
I approach animated logo design by asking: what is the formal logic of this mark, and how does motion express that logic? A mark built on geometric construction might animate through its construction sequence. A mark built on an organic form might animate through a gestural drawing motion. The animation approach emerges from the mark's own character.
Music and Sound Design
Sound is 50% of the experience of motion work. A brand launch film needs music and sound design that matches the visual identity's character — the same qualities that drove type selection and color choice should drive the sonic direction.
I work with composers or sound designers on launch films, not music libraries. Library music is recognizable as library music. A brand with enough investment in its visual identity to commission original design work deserves original audio design.
Post-Launch Motion Library
The launch generates momentum that needs to be sustained. I deliver the launch film alongside a motion library: animated logo files in appropriate formats, social motion templates, transition effects, and documented motion guidelines. The launch is the beginning of the motion brand's life, not the end.
